Beware of the Doctrine of Balaam - By Sis. Nancy Fucci

The Spirit of The Prophets Is Subject To The Prophets

God is calling the church back to Himself, as He did in the past He is using prophets to do this as we can see through the prophetic word spoken to Malachi:

"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." Mal 4:5-6 (KJV)

Even as God sent forth a John the Baptist in the days preceding Jesus’ Ministry, we are seeing a return of the office of the prophet as we have never seen in recent Church history. They are being sent out by God to prepare the church for the return of the Lord. With the rise in the number of prophets, we have also seen the abuse of this office. The Bible clearly warns us throughout the Old and New Testaments about the danger of false prophets and the destruction that can occur through the abuse of this needed office. (See Matt 24:5, 11 and 1 Jn 4:1-2)

What better way for the enemy to destroy the body of Christ than to use a false prophet? Balaam was a prophet who caused Israel to come into great sin not by cursing her but by causing error to come into her midst to bring a division between God and Israel.

Today we are seeing a spirit of Balaam infiltrate the Church. There are those who are called prophets giving words attributed to God that do not line up with Scripture or to the standard of God. They are causing the Church to subtlety shift away from the righteous standard of the Bible to line up with these new visions. Prophecy never comes above the Scriptures but must line up with the Word of God.

Even Malichi preceded the passage about the prophet like Elijah by telling them to hold to the Law of Moses.

"Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments." Malachi 4:4(KJV)

Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments." Malachi 4:4(KJV)

then we see the next verse:

""Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: " Malachi 4:5(KJV)

The apostle Peter as he neared his death was very concerned about the rise of false prophets. The book of second Peter gives us some clear direction about discerning true and false prophecy.

In II Peter 2: 16-21, Peter speaks of seeing Jesus transfigured on the mountain. He tells of hearing the voice of God the Father speak from heaven. Yet he sets the Scripture above what he has personally seen and heard.

"And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they weremoved by the Holy Spirit." 2 Peter 1:18-21 (NKJV) , which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy ofScripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." 2 Peter 1:18-21 (NKJV)

The King James Version reads "we have also a more sure word of prophecy"."If Peter’s experience with Jesus Himself is said by Peter to be subordinate to the "more sure" Word of the Scriptures, we have both a guideline and an ultimate statement. The guideline is that no experience holds greater authority than the Word of God." **** In the spirit and practical truth of Peter’s words there is no comparison between the eternal Word of God and the present "words" of prophetic utterance. Prophecies are proper, biblically shown to be desirable (1 Cor.14:1 and helpful (1 Cor.14:3, 5). But the teaching of the Holy Scriptures are ultimate, conclusively authoritative, and "more to be desired are they than gold". ( Ps 19:7-11) [Jack W. Hawford; Spirit Filled Life Bible]

As Peter stated in the above passage, no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation. The word interpretation means origin. The passage goes on to read that prophecy doesn’t come by the will of man but that holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. The prophet is not to speak what he thinks but he is to speak what God says.

"And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets." (1 Cor 14:32 KJV)

The prophet is to subject his spirit. That word is very interesting because it means to submit his spirit.Subject - 5293. hupotasso, hoop-ot-as'-so; from G5259 and G5021; to subordinate; reflex. to obey:--be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto.

The problem is who is the prophet submitting his spirit to, the LORD, evil spirits or even his own self will. As Peter wrote the Holy men spoke under the control of the Holy Spirit.

Balaam is a good example of this problem. In Numbers 22 Balak called for Balaam to come and prophecy curses over Israel. This prophet came to inquire of the LORD whether he should go to meet with Balak. Even though he was told not to go, his own will wanted to do what Balak requested. The Lord told him to go but with the directive that he could only speak what the Lord told him to do. (Numbers 22:20)

So off goes Balaam to prophesy blessings over Israel, but the Lord knows the intents of the heart. Balaam really wanted to do what Balak asked. The Lord appears as an Angel of the Lord with a sword in his hand three times to Balaam. Balaam the prophet or seer is so intent on what he is about to do that he doesn’t even see the Angel or the dangerous position he is in. But his dumb donkey can see it and saves his life.

The Lord with the sword or His Word comes to strongly remind Balaam that it is His Word alone that he is to speak.

"Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face. And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:" (Num 22:31-32 KJV)

"And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again. And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak." (Num 22:34-35 KJV)

Balaam was a prophet who prophesied by the use of sorcery. (see Numbers 23:23 and 24:1) The strong rebuke by the Lord was to caution him to not prophecy by his usual methods of sorcery but only to speak God’s Word. Balaam could not use the spirit of prophecy to curse Israel by using the occult ways of sorcery and divination because God would not allow it. Some prophets of today have brought these very methods of prophecy into the church. They have crossed over into the New Age area of angel worship, dream interpretation, orbs etc.

"Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD." (Jer 23:16 KJV)

"I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings." (Jer 23:21-22 KJV)

"I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith. Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD." (Jer 23:25-32 KJV)

Balaam’s words of prophecy had great power to them. In blessing Israel he was causing a curse to come upon Balak. (See Numbers 24:9)

The words of a prophet today are very powerful also. In their prophesying great blessings over the church instead of bringing a word of correction, they are causing a curse to come upon the body of Christ. The church has become impotent as it wallows in these words of blessings. While the world is dying from the darkness of sin, the church is falling prey to the doctrine of Balaam. The very spirit that brought a curse on Israel was compromise with the things of the flesh. What Balaam couldn’t do with a curse, he did by causing Israel to move away from the doctrines. The book of Jude says to contend for the faith because some have crept into the church bringing in old and new apostasies. They reject authority and speak evil of what they don’t know. They run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit (Jude 3-4, 8-11)

Just what is the error of Balaam? Going astray from morals and doctrine which is what we are seeing in the church today. Sound doctrine is called legalism. The false prophets of today have gone astray of the plume line. (See Is 28:16-17, Amos 7:7-9 & Zech 4:6-10) They have left the doctirnes of the Word and by their revelations have made new doctrines, which the church is embracing as truth.

Balaam’s error also was getting caught up in prophesying for greed and profit. The devil’s trick is to appeal to the honor of the prophet. We see today not a spirit of humility in many of the prophets but an arrogance and pride. What they are seeing, they claim no one else has seen or heard. They are being led away by a spirit of pride. (See Num. 23:17-18, 37 & 24:10-13)

If these are false prophets why are so many saying the same thing?

Today there is a whole slew of prophets judging these Balaam words as true while true prophets are denounced and criticized as not being in the flow of God. The true prophets are said to be legalistic because they hold to the Word of God. This happened in the Old Testament and is happening today as God allows the Church to have what it wants.

In 1 Kings 22:5-28, King Ahab had 400 prophets prophecy to him about victory in the battle. There was one true prophet of the Lord who prophesied his death. This true prophet was mocked, abused and put in prison and Ahab listened to the false prophets. Four hundred to one sounds like the majority should be correct. That’s not true when the four hundred are listening to a lying spirit and telling the king what he wants to hear.

We see this same thing happening today as the church thinks because a large group of prophets are saying the same thing that it must be the voice of the Lord. That could be true but are the prophecies lining up with the Word of God? Micaiah the son of Imlah was the one true voice of God to Ahab and his prophecy was fulfilled. KING AHAB WAS KILLED!

The word of prophecy is to be judged by the other prophets.

"Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge." 1 Corinthians 14:29(KJV)

The Word of God tells us that prophecy is to be judged. What form of judgement is to be used? Is it open to subjective interpretation, how it makes me feel? Or to objective interpretation based on the Word of God, which is absolute truth? Too many prophecies today are prefaced by; "I feel that ...instead of "thus says the Lord". For example in a prophetic word I recently heard, the person prophesying never mentioned the Lord. Everything that was said in the prophecy was prefaced by  "I feel . . "  The problem is that many sheep are accepting every word that is spoken in prophecy as truth. They do not line it up to the Word of God or examine whether the prophetic word is true.

The Apostle Peter outlines for us in the book of II Peter how to discern false prophets and teachers.

  1. They use destructive Doctrines (II Peter 2:1-3)
    • They secretly bring in destructive heresies.
    • Many will follow their destructive ways.
    • Many will blaspheme the way of truth.
    • They are filled with covetousness and exploit with deceptive words.
  2. They are Under God’s Judgement (II Peter 2:9-11)
    • Judgement will be on those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness.
    • They despise authority.
    • They are presumptuous and self-willed.
    • They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries.
  3. They are Depraved (II Peter 2:12-17)
    • They speak evil of the things they do not understand.
    • They carouse in their own deceptions while they feast (worship) with you.
    • They have forsaken the right way and gone astray.
  4. "Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet. 2 Peter 2:15-16(KJV)

They are wells without water. They do not have the Water of the Word that will satisfy the deep need of God’s people. (John 4:10, 13-14)

  5. They are Deceived and bringing deception to others (II Peter 2:18-22)
    • They speak great swelling words of emptiness.
    • They allure through the lusts of the flesh.
    • They promise liberty but actually bring bondage.
    • They had escaped the wages of sin but are again entangled in it.

"For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have knownit, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dogis turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire." II Peter 2:20-22 KJV

We need the Word of Prophecy in the church today. What words will we listen to, the kind that tickle our ears and make us feel good? The kind of words that promises prosperity and blessing of God without submitting ourselves to the Lordship of Christ?

We need the word of the prophet that will cause us to come to repentance. We need the word that will prepare us for the work of the ministry. WE need the word that will cause us to have a heart that seeks God’s ways and not His deeds

God is a God of order and has appointed prophets for this hour of the church. Don’t be fooled by what you hear but check the prophecies against the Word of Truth, the Bible.

"Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints." 1 Cor 14:29-33 (KJV)

" Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order." 1 Cor 14:39-40 KJV

Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

Indeed, let all things be done decently and in order. The Church needs to have the attitude of the Bereans. Pastors and teachers need to educate the people, in the Scriptures, so that they can detect the true from the false.

Let us not throw away the genuine prophetic word but hold fast to the true and reject the false.

"Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good "1 Thess 5:20-21 (KJV)
